On December 7, 2020, the International Olympic Committee agreed to include breakdancing as an official event in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In the late 1960s, hip-hop appeared in New York City on the east coast of the United States and California on the west coast. It was the dance of the urban poor of black people in the United States. In the mid-1980s, hip-hop was introduced to China. In 1990, Germany held the first "Battle of the Year" hip-hop competition, which is one of the most important annual hip-hop events in the world.
